RIDGING

Ridging and Re-ridging

Generally, the ridge of a thatched roof will require replacing every ten to fifteen years, but this may vary depending on the material used and its associated lifespan. Prevailing weather conditions may also influence the lifespan of the ridge.

Styles of Ridge

The style of the ridge and patterns can vary depending on the material, local tradition or customer preference. We offer a choice of two ridging styles, the traditional ‘Flush Cut Ridge,’ or the more decorative ‘Block Pattern Ridge.’ We are happy to design and vary either of these styles to meet your requirements.

RE-RIDGING

As the ridge is at the highest point of the roof, it takes more punishment from the weather and as such requires more frequent maintenance than the rest of the roof.

Signs of a ridge in need of attention are typically that the spars and pattern are degrading and losing shape, loose or rusting wiring and build-up of moss. The ridge itself will lose its shape and start to look generally tired.

We provide a full re-ridging service to ensure that your roof is kept in top condition.

FLUSH RIDGES

The flush ridge is also sometimes known as the 'Wrap Over', 'Turn Over' or 'Butt-Up' ridge. Flush ridges are traditional in Dorset and, as their name suggests, remain flush with the main coatwork of thatch.

Although flush ridges are often associated with longstraw roofs they can be applied to any roof.

Flush ridges are normally decorated with a spar pattern and give a simple traditional look to a thatched roof ideal for heritage restoration projects.

BLOCK RIDGES

A block ridge is where a block of thatch is placed on top of the roof, usually about four inches thick. The ‘block’ is then styled into an ornamental pattern of your choice and may be scallops, diamonds, or a simple straight cut ridge.

The block pattern can be designed to your specific requirements, whether that be a traditional pattern or a new design invented by you!

We have a variety of pattern design ideas from previous projects, which may help to give you inspiration and we will work with you to achieve the look you want.
